Islam in Australia
The history of Muslims in Australia dates back to the 17th century, well before European contact with the mainland
The Makassan traders from Indonesia had a harmonious relationship with the Indigenous people of Northern Australia
In the 1860’s a large number of Afghani-Muslim cameleers arrived in Australia to work the camel trains which opened up the interior of the continent
They accompanied the great explorers of the Outback and were instrumental pioneers in the tough terrain
Due to the Afghans’ knowledge and expertise with camels, they were credited with saving the lives of numerous early European explorers and were vital for exploration
Hence the South-North Railway is named “The Ghan” – short for The Afghan
They eventually settled in the areas near Alice Springs as well as in the Northern Territory and many inter-married with the Indigenous population
The remains of the oldest mosque in Australia is situated near Maree (which they built)
Today, Australia has many mosques spread throughout its cities, towns and villages
Their design and architecture tend to replicate Middle Eastern models
The Mosques serve as a hub of worship and religious education for Australia’s Muslim community
In the early twentieth century, Muslims of non-European descent experienced many difficulties in emigrating to Australia because of the government’s “White Australia” policy
However, some European Muslims, like the Albanians were able to settle
From the 1970s onwards, there was a significant shift in the government’s attitude towards immigration
Instead of trying to make new Australians assimilate and forgo their unique cultural identities, the government became more accommodating and tolerant
Large-scale Muslim migration began in 1975 with the migration of Lebanese Muslims
The Lebanese are still the largest and highest-profile Muslim group in Australia
However, the Turks and Albanians form the largest number of Muslims living in Melbourne
Approximately 3.4% of Sydney’s population are Muslim, (about half of Australia’s Islamic population)
Muslim population by State:
NSW – 50%, Victoria – 33%, WA – 7%,
QL – 5%, SA – 3%, ACT – 1%, NT and Tasmania – 0.3%
According to the 2006 census, approximately 340,392 of the Australian population identify as Muslim
Muslims in Australia come from more than 60 ethnic groupings

Jermaine also talks about his love for Muslims and his desire to live in Muslim countries. He has found great peace and calm through his Islamic beliefs and love of Allah.
He was born December 11, 1954,he is an American Grammy Award-winning singer, bass guitarist, former member of The Jackson 5 and brother of American pop stars Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson. And Most importantly, he is a Muslim.
Jermaine talks about his love of other cultures and people, his reasons for leaving Christianity and becoming Muslim. His devotion to Allah, the great benefits that he gets from praying five times and also from doing optional fasting during the week. He explains how he feels at ease and peace by his Islamic beliefs and his rememberance of Allah.
Real happiness and peace can be found in submitting to the commands of the Creator and the Sustainer of this world. God has said in the Qur’an: Truly, in remembering God do hearts find rest. (Qur’an, 13:28) On the other hand, the one who turns away from the Qur’an will have a life of hardship in this world. God has said: But whoever turns away from the Qur’an, he will have a hard life, and We will raise him up blind on the Day of Judgment. (Qur’an,20:124) This may explain why some people commit suicide while they enjoy the material comfort money can buy. For example, look at Cat Stevens (now Yusuf Islam), formerly a famous pop singer who used to earn sometimes more than $150,000 a night. After he converted to Islam, he found true happiness and peace, which he had not found in material success.

KUALA LUMPUR 29 Mac — Bekas Perdana Menteri Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad menyeru umat Islam di seluruh dunia memulaukan produk Belanda sebagai satu bantahan berkesan berikutan sebuah filem Belanda, Fitna, yang mengkritik Al-Quran yang disiarkan di Internet.
Beliau berkata pemulauan itu boleh menyebabkan Belanda lumpuh kerana umat Islam meliputi sebahagian besar penduduk dunia yang kaya dan juga pengimport terbesar.
Bagaimanapun, semua 1.3 bilion umat islam di dunia mestilah bersatu dan meletakkan kepentingan Islam dan umat Islam daripada keperluan individu jika mahukan pemulauan ini berkesan.
“Kalau orang Islam bersatu kita mudah saja ambil tindakan. Kalau kita pulau barangan dari Belanda dia tutup negeri, pasal yang beli banyak sekali, yang kaya sekali di dunia ini adalah orang Islam.
“Kalau semua 1,300 juta orang Islam kata kami tidak kan beli barang dari Belanda, maka barulah berkesan.
“Kalau nak pulau buatlah betul-betul. Tapi orang kita kata, dia (Belanda) pun berniaga dengan kita juga, kalau kita tahan dia, dia rugilah. Jadi (kalau begini) kita tak fikir sebagai orang Islam, kita fikir untuk kepentingan diri,” katanya kepada pemberita selepas merasmikan mesyuarat agung ke-46 Pertubuhan Kebajikan Islam Malaysia (Perkim) di sini hari ini.
Filem Fitna itu, selama 15 minit yang disiarkan dalam sebuah laman web pada 27 Mac yang mengkritik Islam, yang menunjukkan surah Al-Quran dengan berlatar belakangkan imej keganasan akibat serangan pengganas.
Ahli majlis perundangan Belanda Geert Wilders menerbitkan filem itu, yang menunjukkan kenyataan daripada paderi yang radikal dan menyebut surah Al-Quran dengan diselitkan imej serangan 11 Sept terhadap Pusat Dagangan Dunia (WTC) di New York, pengeboman kereta api penumpang di Madrid, Sepanyol pada 2004 dan pembunuhan pengelur filem Belanda Theo van Gogh di Amsterdam street pada akhir tahun itu.
Sebelum itu, Dr Mahathir berkata filem tesebut disiarkan berikutan salah faham dan “sudah pasti ada motif kritikal”. “Mereka akan terus berbuat demikian sehingga kita menunjukkan Islam itu satu agama yang baik, kita bukan orang yang ganas, bahawa kita tidak berbohong kepada orang ramai…tetapi ini mesti ditunjukkan dalam amalan oleh masyarakat Islam ,” kata beliau.
Dalam perkembangan lain, Dr Mahathir yang juga Yang Dipertua Perkim, berkata adalah penting bagi pertubuhan itu memberikan tanggapan yang betul mengenai Islam dan bukan Islam supaya tidak berlaku ketidak salah faham mengenai agama Islam yang boleh membawa kepada kebimbangan, curiga atau pertentangan terhadap Islam..
